In social sciences and humanities disciplines, the monograph format might be seen as a more important form of scholarly communication than the journal article. In these fields, thousands of authoritative, original monographs are issued in PDF form by public policy institutes, government agencies, advocacy groups, think-tanks, university research centres and other public interest groups. Without central organization, these important documents are often overlooked by students and researchers.

The desLibris Public Documents Collection provides that organization and visibility. On a daily basis desLibris editors survey the sites of over 1000 authoritative “grey literature” publishers, harvesting monographs to produce a curated collection of monographs. The agencies included in this collection represent the leading edge of primary research and opinion in all areas of Canadian public policy. The service provides new documents on a daily basis, fully indexed and geared for library use. Every document is accompanied by a MARC record as soon as it appears, so library collections may be kept current.

The Public Documents Collection supersedes and incorporates the Canadian Public Policy and Canadian Health Research Collections, which were compiled by CEL during the period 2005 through 2016 and made available on the ebrary/ProQuest platform. The contents of these collections now form part of the desLibris Public Documents Collection.
